MEDIA ADVISORY - Breaking down silos of vascular research, treatment and care: Six leading Canadian health care groups tackle the growing burden of vascular diseases

MONTREAL, Oct. 25, 2023 /CNW/ - From October 25 – 29, 2023, more than 3,500 health care experts from across the country representing all facets of vascular disease will congregate for the first time in a decade at Le Palais des congrès in Montréal, Québec for Vascular 2023. Six groups are joining their respective annual scientific programs into one event to combine efforts to tackle the growing burdens of heart disease, diabetes, dementia, kidney disease, thrombosis, and stroke – diseases that impact millions of people in Canada every year, and which share many common root causes and treatments.

People who live with vascular diseases affecting organs like the heart, brain, kidneys, and blood vessels throughout the body may see many healthcare professionals for treatment. Their care is better when healthcare professionals work together to treat the whole person. Vascular 2023 is that opportunity for health professionals to come together and learn from one another.

"We will be most successful in tackling these interconnected diseases if we come together as individuals and as societies to learn from each other," says Dr. Sonia Anand, Chair of the Vascular Day Scientific Program Committee. "When we take a transdisciplinary approach to research, when we listen to many voices and learn from each other, we will be more creative in our pathways to discovery and in implementing solutions to healthcare problems."

Who: Vascular 2023 is hosted by the Canadian Cardiovascular Society, the Canadian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism, the Canadian Venous Thromboembolism Research Network (CanVECTOR), Diabète Québec, Diabetes Canada, and Thrombosis Canada.

• Delegates include physicians, researchers, clinicians, nurses, educators, allied health professionals, general practitioners, pharmacists, rehab specialists, diabetes educators. policy makers, and students.

What: Through workshops, plenary sessions, trainee programs and more, delegates will have access to multiple days of educational content to increase their knowledge and tools to help them manage complex issues they face in their workplace.

• Sessions highlight specific, immediate and critical topics in vascular care such as controversies around the foods we choose to promote vascular health; emerging digital health tools that could improve vascular care; the use of artificial intelligence for better detection and treatment of vascular disease; the health inequities for Indigenous peoples in Canada who experience diseases such as diabetes at greater rates; controversies around new diabetes and weight loss drugs; the relationship between climate change and cardiovascular diseases; new Clinical Practice Guidelines in many therapeutic areas; and more.
• Networking opportunities like Braindates and the IDEA lounge offer delegates new ways to share knowledge and learn from each other through meaningful conversations.
