Media Advisory: Closing Ceremony for the 90 Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life Events

MONTREAL, June 18, 2015 /CNW Telbec/ - The Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) is pleased to invite Montreal media to join Denis Coderre, Mayor of Montreal and Pierre B. Lafrenière, CCS Board Chair at the Relay For Life Closing Ceremony, the largest campaign held in Quebec in the fight against cancer. In 2015, across Quebec, 90 Relay For Life events took place. This year's goal was to raise $13 million.

June 19th, 2015

• 6:15 pm — Closing Ceremony begins: unveiling of Quebec's Relay For Life 2015 campaign results(Denis Coderre, Pierre B. Lafrenière and other CCS representatives)
• 7:15 pm — Montreal Downtown Relay For Life event begins with the Survivors' Lap (some 200 people living with cancer will walk while being applauded by 500 participants)
• 9:00 pm — Luminary Ceremony. After being lit during a twilight ceremony, hundreds of luminaries provide light and inspiration to participants all night long. Luminaries (candles placed in bags) bear the names of cancer survivors and loved ones who have lost their battle with cancer.

The Relay For Life is a 12-hour walk by night that brings together people who had or have cancer and their caregivers, families, friends and colleagues. It's a unique occasion to raise money, celebrate life and fight against cancer. In 2015, some 42,000 participants will walk in one of the 90 Relay For Life events that will take place almost everywhere in Quebec.

The money raised in Relay For Life events will enable the CCS to:

• fund research projects (over 70 projects are currently underway in the province)
• invest more in prevention and advocate for laws that protect public health
• help and inform tens of thousands of Quebecers

Together, let's save more lives!
With the support of 300,000 donors annually and 30,000 volunteers, the CCS is the cancer charity in Quebec that has the greatest potential to save more lives. Every day, some 370 Quebecers turn to the organization. So, the CCS is doing everything to raise the global cancer survival rate from 63% at present to 80% by 2030.
