FORT MCMURRAY, AB, May 16, 2019 /CNW/ - The National President of the Canadian Union of Public Employees will visit the Wood Buffalo picket line on Friday.
Mark Hancock, President of the 680,000 member union will address locked out employees of Wood Buffalo Housing. The employees have been locked out since May 10th because the municipal subsidiary wants to replace staff with fly-by-night contractors.
"Replacing dedicated, long term workers who care about the residents and care about Wood Buffalo is a mistake," said Hancock. "We've seen this game before, the costs end up increasing, and the service levels plummet."
Hancock said the union has alternatives that would save almost $1 million per year.
"For the good of your own community, Wood Buffalo Housing needs to get back to the table and work this out instead of putting dedicated employees on the street," said Hancock.
