OTTAWA, April 1, 2019 /CNW/ - Three hundred and thirty eight young women from across Canada are in Ottawa this week for the Daughters of the Vote summit, which sees them take over a session of the House of Commons on Wednesday, April 3rd, as well as the Senate on April 4th. The multi-day leadership program is organized by Equal Voice, a national organization promoting the election of more women. Equal Voice representatives and Daughters of the Vote delegates are available for interview.
Daughters of the Vote is an ambitious initiative created by Equal Voice in 2017 to mark the centenary of some women first getting the right to vote in federal elections, and to address the still incomplete journey of women's full participation in politics in Canada today. Currently, only 27% of seats in the House of Commons are held by women.
During Daughters of the Vote, each federal riding in Canada is represented by a young woman aged 18-23. The 338 delegates were selected through an open call for applications.
The 2019 Daughters of the Vote summit is generously supported by the Government of Canada through the Department for Women and Gender Equality and by lead corporate sponsors Via Rail, Air Canada, Imperial and Facebook and Instagram.
