Why: Canadians are concerned about food contamination and hospital-acquired infections. But many don't understand how irradiation can protect them from bacteria such as E.coli and Salmonella. Gamma irradiation reduces harmful bacteria and eliminates insect pests in a wide range of products and materials, from fruit and spices to hospital gowns, syringes and pharmaceuticals. Extensively studied for more than 50 years, the process is recognized as safe and effective by international public health and government agencies such as the World Health Organization, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Health Canada.
