Media Advisory - Geoffrey Hinton to headline 2024 Higher Education Summit

TORONTO, Nov. 24, 2024 /CNW/ - The 'godfather of AI' and recent Nobel Prize recipient – Geoffrey Hinton – will be the star attraction when he appears at this year's Higher Education Summit in Toronto on Monday, Nov. 25.

Hinton, a pioneer in artificial intelligence, received his BA in experimental psychology from Cambridge in 1970 and his PhD in artificial intelligence from Edinburgh in 1978. He held faculty positions at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Toronto, where he is now an emeritus distinguished professor. From 2013 to 2023, he worked part-time at Google as a vice-president and engineering fellow. He will take the stage for his keynote at about 1:15 p.m.

Other featured speakers at the two-day conference that starts Sunday, Nov. 24, include Sheridan College graduate and Oscar-winning animator, Domee Shi, and National Geographic explorer and star of Epic Adventures Bertie Gregory.

The Higher Education Summit, run by Colleges Ontario, is one of North America's premier conferences on post-secondary education. This year's conference takes place at the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel and is open to the media. The full agenda can be found at:

• 1:15 p.m. – Featured address by Domee Shi, director / vice president of creative, Pixar Animation Studios, moderated by Sheridan College president Janet Morrison.

Monday, Nov. 25

• 8:15 a.m. – Featured address by National Geographic explorer and wildlife filmmaker Bertie Gregory.
• 1:15 p.m. – Keynote address by British-Canadian computer scientist, cognitive psychologist and 2024 Nobel Prize laureate in Physics, Geoffrey Hinton.
• 9:15 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. – Concurrent sessions covering topics such as AI and cybersecurity, relevance through election periods and innovation and intrapreneurship.
