Media Advisory - Government of Canada celebrates the national historic significance of the David Dunlap Observatory Français
RICHMOND HILL, ON, June 14, 2022 /CNW/ - Mr. Majid Jowhari, Member of Parliament for Richmond Hill, will participate in a Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada plaque unveiling ceremony to commemorate the historic significance of the David Dunlap Observatory.
The David Dunlap Observatory National Historic Site, located on what was then an isolated and rural landscape, was central to putting Canada on the world stage of astronomic discovery, and foundational to establishing its academic astronomy. As the country's first teaching observatory, its state-of-the-art facilities, including the world's second-largest telescope, attracted astronomers and academics from around the world. The observatory yielded research leading to hundreds of publications and a major astronomical breakthrough in 1971, when Thomas Bolton's research confirmed the existence of black holes.
Mr. Jowhari will make the announcement on behalf of the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change and Minister responsible for Parks Canada.
