Media Advisory - Governor General to Take Part in a Ceremony Commemorating the Polytechnique Tragedy Français
OTTAWA, Dec. 4, 2019 /CNW/ - Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada, will take part in the ceremony commemorating the Polytechnique tragedy, to be held at the Mount Royal Chalet on Friday, December 6, 2019, at 5 p.m.
To keep alive the memory of the 14 young women killed on December 6, 1989, the Comité Mémoire, in collaboration with the City of Montréal and Polytechnique Montréal, is inviting the public to attend this gathering.
At 5:10 p.m., the exact time that the first shots were fired on December 6, 1989, 14 light beams (designed by Moment Factory) will light up the Montréal skyline above Mount Royal. As the names of each of the 14 victims is said aloud, a beam of light will be lit in their honour.
To mark the 30 years since this tragedy, 14 Canadian universities from Vancouver to Halifax will also shine a beam of light into the sky. After a minute of silence, a 150-person choir will perform to conclude the ceremony.
