Media Advisory - Governor General to Take Part in D-Day Commemorations in France and in Nova Scotia Français
OTTAWA, June 3, 2019 /CNW/ - Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, will travel to France and Nova Scotia from June 3 to 6, 2019, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day.
The Governor General will travel to Normandy, France, where she will attend the unveiling of a monument dedicated to Canadians and a ceremony at the Bény-sur-Mer Canadian war cemetery. She will also attend a first light ceremony with members of the Queen's Own Rifles of Canada. She will then return to Canada to attend the Canadian signature ceremony at the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site. These important commemorative events pay tribute to the sacrifices made by Canadians on D-Day and throughout the war.

Ceremony at the Bény-sur-Mer Canadian War Cemetery Ceremony
The Governor General will participate in a ceremony at the Bény-sur-Mer Canadian War Cemetery which holds the graves of more than 2 000 Canadians who gave their lives during the landings in Normandy and during the early stages of the Battle of Normandy.

Juno75 Gala
Her Excellency will attend the Juno75 Gala hosted by the Juno Beach Centre Association. The Gala will honour the memory, sacrifice and courage of the 90 000 Canadians who served in Normandy during the summer of 1944. General Jonathan H. Vance, Canadian Chief of the Defence Staff, will deliver the keynote address on this occasion.

The Governor General will attend a ceremony in Bernières-sur-Mer to honour the Queen's Own Rifles of Canada. The time of the ceremony reflects the time that the Queen's Own Rifles of Canada arrived in Normandy 75 years ago.
