Media Advisory - Her Excellency the Governor General of Canada to present The Queen's York Rangers with a new Guidon
TORONTO, May 11, 2022 /CNW/ - The Regimental Council of the Queen's York Rangers
Media are invited to watch Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, present a new Guidon to The Queen's York Rangers (1st American Regiment ) (RCAC) at Fort York National Historic Site on the 14th of May 2022.
Also in attendance at the ceremony will be the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, OC, OOnt., Lieutenant Governor of Ontario and Colonel of the Regiment, His Excellency Whit Fraser, CC, spouse of Governor General Mary Simon as well as other dignitaries from Toronto and York Region, plus some of the many friends and supporters of the Regiment.
Historically a consecrated flag carried by a military unit as a rallying point in battle, today the Guidon is a symbol of spirit, history and sacrifice and a unit's most honoured possession. It records the heroic actions of the Regiment's soldiers and embodies the ideals of duty, tradition and honour. The Rangers' new Guidon incorporates some of the many battle honours awarded to the Regiment, including five new honours: Queenston, Niagara, Detroit, Defence of Canada 1812-1815, and Afghanistan.
The predecessor of The Queen's York Rangers (1st American Regiment) (RCAC) was the Queen's Rangers, a Loyalist unit of the British army, who were presented with their first colours during the American Revolutionary War. The commanding officer, John Graves Simcoe refused to surrender the colours at Yorktown in 1781, and smuggled them to Great Britain. Nearly two centuries later they were discovered and returned to the Regiment and are now displayed in the Officers' Mess at Fort York Armoury. They are the oldest known colours in North America and amongst the oldest in the world.
Built by the Queen's Rangers in 1793, Fort York (now Fort York National Historic Site) is a living historical monument with deep connections to The Queen's York Rangers (1st American Regiment) (RCAC) headquartered at the adjacent Fort York Armoury.
