Media Advisory: International Youth Day Conference and Launch of "Don't Vote" Campaign
TORONTO, Aug. 11, 2015 /CNW/ - Warren (Smokey) Thomas, President of OPSEU, will help kick off the Eighth International Youth Day conference, Invest in YOUR Future. Hosted by OPSEU's Provincial Young Workers Committee, this two-and-a-half day event is designed to help motivate, educate and mobilize young workers.

The conference will feature a number of dynamic speakers who will share their invaluable expertise and many years of experience related to bargaining, organizing and human rights.
"I'm delighted and encouraged by the overwhelming response," said Thomas. "This is about succession planning. We are absolutely committed to equipping these young workers with the leadership skills and knowledge they need to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow."
As Canadians head to the polls this fall, the Provincial Young Workers Committee will launch a non‑partisan campaign at the conference aimed at engaging young workers in the political process. Its tone will be good-natured sarcasm – edgy, funny and fun – with the slogan "Don't Vote" (#dontvote).
Thomas believes a multi-platform campaign targeting youth is necessary and timely. "Most young people support the things the labour movement has consistently fought for: excellent public services, good jobs, a clean environment, equality and justice. And too many of them are still living in their parents' basement.
"Sadly, less than 39 per cent of Canadians under age 25 vote, leaving change in the hands of voters over 45. The most important thing that young people can have on their resume is that they voted in the 2015 federal election."
