PEMBROKE, ON, Jan. 12, 2023 /CNW/ - Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU/SEFPO) Local 459 members at Family and Children's Services of Renfrew County will hold a rally on January 13 to show solidarity with nine OPSEU/SEFPO members who have been unfairly suspended by their employer.
As staff at Family and Children's Services of Renfrew County, the suspended members spend their days working with their clients to strengthen families and the communities around them. They work with Indigenous families in the area, counsel students in local schools, liaise with the OPP, and are social workers working in child protection.
The employer intentionally targeted the majority of the local union leadership, who successfully fought off the layoffs of 14 staff in 2022. The union believes that this unfair targeting of workers reflects an intent to attack and weaken the union and a retaliation for the union's successful prevention of the layoffs.
