TORONTO, May 1, 2019 /CNW/ - Despite Premier Doug Ford's repeated promise that, under his government, no public sector workers would lose their jobs, dozens of clerical staff at Toronto's St. Michael's Hospital have just been terminated.
"It does beg questions about the collateral damage of the Ford PC health system restructuring on patient care and staffing levels. Is this the beginning of a wave of hospital job losses under the PC overhaul and what is the Premier going to do about it?" Asks Michael Hurley, president of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) hospital division, the Ontario Council of Hospital Unions (OCHU).
On the heels of a large provincial protest against PC health care restructuring that many believe will result in huge segments of the public system being privatized and cut, tomorrow (May 2, 2019), at 11:00 a.m., CUPE will hold a media conference about these job losses.
Clerical workers, concerned about their jobs at Toronto's three catholic hospitals which have merged into Unity Health Toronto, will be speaking at the public space (corner of Queen Street East and Bond, across from St. Michael's Hospital at tomorrow's media conference, which will also feature the release of a Toronto-specific poll on the PC plans to drastically alter how patients access health care and how Torontonians – hundreds of them in PC-held ridings in the city – feel about the changes.
