Media advisory - Preparing for the UN's next nature conference: Minister Guilbeault and Minister Muhamad from Colombia to provide update ahead of COP16 Français
OTTAWA, ON, Aug. 19, 2024 /CNW/ - Media representatives are advised that the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, will participate in a UN-led media availability to pass the torch to Colombia, which will host the 16th meeting of the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, also known as COP16. He will be joined by the Honourable Maria Susana Muhamad, Colombia's Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, and Astrid Schomaker, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
In 2022, Canada stepped up to co-host COP15 in Montréal, where participants agreed to the Kunming-Montréal Global Biodiversity Framework, a historic global framework to safeguard nature and halt and reverse biodiversity loss, putting nature on a path to recovery by 2050. Canada advocated for international collaboration on ambitious goals, including conserving 30 percent of lands and oceans by 2030, which was included in the agreement.
