Media Advisory/Photo Op - Homesick for the holidays? The cure is a free phone call away
Mobilicity event invites all Torontonians to call loved ones across Canada and abroad for free inside a giant 24-foot snow globe
TORONTO, Dec. 17, 2012 /CNW/ - While the holiday season is a time of joy, for those who can't celebrate with out-of-town loved ones, it can be a time of loneliness. According to new research, the majority (62%) of Canadians miss their loved ones more around the holiday season. The survey also found that 73 per cent said if they can't be with friends or family over the holidays, hearing their voices over the telephone is the next best thing.
The City of Toronto estimates that half its population was born outside of Canada. In 2006, Toronto was home to 20 per cent of all immigrants to Canada - resulting in over 140 languages and dialects being spoken in the city. And, Citizenship and Immigration Canada estimates the number of foreign students in Toronto almost doubled from almost 14,000 in 2006 to over 25,000 in 2011 with the largest number of international students coming from China, India and Korea.

About the Survey
From December 13th to December 14th 2012, an online survey was conducted among a sample of 1,011 randomly selected Canadian adults who are also Angus Reid Forum panel members. The margin of error — which measures sampling variability — is +/- 3.1%, 19 times out of 20. The sample was balanced by age, gender, region and education (and language in Quebec) according to the most recent census data. Discrepancies in or between totals are due to rounding.
