"Even though I have won three hard fought elections and enjoyed many successes as Mayor of Hampstead, no campaign was as exciting as the demerger battle and no victory more significant," stated Mayor Bill Steinberg. "This is Hampstead's centennial year and so it is fitting that it's also the 10th anniversary of the demerger referendum. Had we not won, we would not have reached our centennial and we would be much worse off than we are today."
"The forced mergers were a sad chapter in our history but the demerger gave us a happy ending," said Anthony Housefather, Côte Saint-Luc Mayor. "It was also a true example of people standing up for what they believe to be right. The fight to take back our cities and towns was tough, but well worth it. Today, I would venture to say that almost all of our residents are very happy we chose to demerge."
"The demerger referendum was the first step in getting our Towns back," affirmed Montreal West Mayor Beny Massella. "Many people worked very hard to get to that step and I believe history shows it was the right move. The municipal demergers allowed each of us to retrieve and reinforce our Towns' independent identities while still working together toward common goals."
About the blue ribbons:
During the demerger campaign, residents tied blue ribbons to their trees as a sign of support. The ribbons are back. This time they are a sign of celebration at our success in getting our cities back. Ribbons will be hung on major streets in the period leading to the event.
