MEDIA AVAILABILITY: UNICEF Canada president in Haiti for fifth anniversary of devastating earthquake that killed more than 220,000 Français
TORONTO, Jan. 9, 2015 /CNW/ -
WHO: David Morley, UNICEF Canada's President and CEO
WHERE: From Port-au-Prince, Haiti, over video Skype, Facetime or telephone
WHEN: Sunday, January 11 and Monday, January 12, 2015 (anniversary)
WHAT: David will be visiting health, education and water and sanitation projects, along with one of the remaining camps in Haiti on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday and Monday, David can speak about:
- What he's seeing and how the rebuilding efforts have progressed in the last five years.
- The great strides that have been made in education. In 2005/2006, less than 50 per cent of primary aged children were in school, by 2012 this had increased to 77 per cent.
- How the large global response has been instrumental in the significant progress made in child rights, including legislation that includes a child-rights code.
- The challenges that remain, including the fact that more than 79,000 people remain displaced in camps and the high number of people who still lack access to safe water, sanitation and health services.
- Whether Haiti has managed to "build back better" in the last five years.
- The response of Canadians to the humanitarian crisis that wreaked havoc on Haiti's already fragile infrastructure and deepened inequities for the most vulnerable children.
