Media Conference - UPDATE - HUMAN REMAINS FOUND IN CALEDON
CALEDON, ON, Sept. 7 /CNW/ - On Sunday September 5, 2010, just before 9:00am, a citizen contacted the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) after a discovery was made in a wooded area near Beech Grove Sideroad and Mountainview Road in the Town of Caledon.
The discovery was determined to be human and after a post mortem examination was completed at the Office of the Chief Coroner in Toronto, the deceased has been positively identified as 42 year old Sonia VARASCHIN of Orangeville. Her death has been ruled a homicide.
The VARASCHIN family has been notified and they have requested privacy as they deal with the news of Sonia's death. The family is currently being supported by members of Caledon/Dufferin Victim Services.
Sonia VARASCHIN was reported missing by her family on Monday August 30, 2010 after she failed to show up for work. Her blood stained Toyota Corolla was located in an alley way behind the Orangeville Town Hall near Alexandria Park and blood was also found at her Spring Street residence.
Detectives from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Criminal Investigations Branch, under the direction of Detective Inspector Mark Pritchard and the Orangeville Police Service are continuing their investigation and believe that someone in the community holds the key to solving this homicide.
Police investigators believe the person or persons responsible for Sonia's murder used her vehicle to move her body from her residence to the wooded area on Beech Grove Sideroad in the Town of Caledon.
Anyone who might have seen Sonia's white Toyota Corolla during the overnight or early morning hours between Sunday August 29 and Monday August 30, 2010, prior to 10:00am is asked to contact the Orangeville Police Service tip line at (519) 941-2522 extension 2211 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
