Solange Tuyishime - BIO -----------------------
Solange Tuyishime spent her childhood in Rwanda until the age of 12, when she and her family were forced to leave their home due to war and genocide. Initially, Solange, her parents and two younger brothers resided in tents outside a refugee camp in the neighboring Congo. It was here that Solange and her family came to know UNICEF, which provided Rwandan refugees with tents, water, containers, food and groundsheets.
Eventually, Solange and her family immigrated to Canada, where they settled in Fredericton, New Brunswick. In remembering her roots, Solange has volunteered many hours to local community and human rights organizations, such as the African Student Union and the Multicultural Association of Fredericton.
At the age of 26 years old, Solange has completed a master's degree in public administration, won numerous scholarships, athletic and academic awards and was crowned Miss Canada International 2006.
Solange has been chosen as UNICEF's 2010 Official Spokesperson for National UNICEF Day, which allows her to share her life experience with others. With her personal story of strength, courage and inspiration, Solange aims to educate Canadians on how they can help suffering children around the world.
