appointed head of UN Women, coming to Canada to receive honours.
MONTREAL, OTTAWA and QUEBEC CITY, Oct 4 /CNW Telbec/ - Reporters Without Borders, the CORIM (Conseil des relations internationales de Montréal), Radio-Canada and in collaboration with the the Centre de la Francophonie des Amériques are pleased to announce that Michelle Bachelet, former President of Chile & recently appointed head of UN Women, will receive the Prix International Courage au Féminin.
During her visit in Canada, Mrs Bachelet will also receive a Honoris Causa doctorate from the University of Ottawa on October 5th. That night, in Montréal, Mrs Bachelet will be honoured during a tribute-evening to be held at the Hyatt Regency.
On October 6th, Mrs Bachelet will be in Quebec City to receive a medal of honour from the National Assembly.
About Michelle Bachelet
Michelle Bachelet was President of the Republic of Chile from 2006 to 2010. Forbes Magazine ranked her one of the world's most powerful women. On September 10th 2010, the United Nations' Secretary General appointed Mrs Bachelet head of UN Women.
At the October 5th tribute-evening, Mrs Bachelet will receive Reporters Without Borders' Prix International du Courage Féminin. The award is remitted to women who continuously fight for the respect of liberties and for the most fundamental human rights.
About Reporters Without Borders
Reporters Without Borders has fought for press freedom on a daily basis since it was founded in 1985. It defends journalists and media assistants imprisoned or persecuted for doing their job and exposes the mistreatment and torture of them in many countries. RWB fights against censorship and laws that undermine press freedom. It also gives financial aid each year to 100 or so journalists or media outlets in difficulty (to pay for lawyers, medical care and equipment) as well to the families of imprisoned journalists. Reporters Without Borders also works to improve the safety of journalists, especially those reporting in war zones.
