Media Invitation - Photo exhibition reveals students' volunteer experience in
the Dominican Republic
TORONTO, Sept. 2 /CNW/ - Centennial College launched its first international service learning trip in March, dispatching eight student volunteers from different faculties to the Dominican Republic to work alongside Spanish-speaking American students. A new photo exhibit recounts their eye-opening experiences.
They were there to contribute to the Dominican Republic Education And Mentoring (DREAM) Project, an American non-profit that provides education and community development opportunities to benefit children, youth and families living in impoverished rural areas of the Caribbean nation.
Students were given digital cameras to record their work and their travels through some of the Dominican Republic's poorest areas. Their candid and beautiful images capture their experiences and chronicle the impact of the project on the local residents and upon themselves.
The exhibition, entitled Universal HuMandate, illustrates Centennial College's commitment to the international community with its pilot global citizenship initiative. It reveals a reality that differs from our own, and allows people to experience life through the eyes of those less fortunate.
Through their photos, the students convey the imperative that fostering change is possible no matter where the help is coming from and where it is deployed.
The official exhibit opening takes place on Sept. 8 at 6 pm in the Corridor Gallery on the second floor of Centennial's Centre for Creative Communications. The gallery is open to the public until Oct. 1.
Date/time: Wednesday, September 8, 6 to 9 pm Location: The Centre for Creative Communications, Centennial College 951 Carlaw Avenue (at Mortimer), Toronto
