Media Invitation - Opioid Crisis: What Public Health Is Not Telling Us: An Analysis of Coroner's Reports Reveal the Real Faces of People Who Die from Overdoses, and the Main Substances Involved

MONTREAL, Nov. 17, 2020 /CNW Telbec/ -At the request of the  Association Québecoise pour la promotion de la santé des usagers de drogue (AQPSUD) as well as its partner organizations, the research team of the Jean-Monbourquette Chair, under the direction by Prof. André-Anne Parent, analyzed the 340 reports of people who died by overdose in 2017.

More than a simple sample, the analysis illustrated the diversity of the substances involved in all overdose deaths, as well as the socio-economic "profile" and the context in which the people died.

"The reports conclude that there are at least 221 cases (153 men and 68 women) in which the most likely cause of death is linked to more than one substance."

"These are men and women aged 41 to 64 who are the most numerous in the reports analyzed."

The Government of Canada says the country is experiencing a serious crisis of opioid consumption, but the paradoxical results of our report require us to look beyond the use of opioids.

As a matter of fact, this first analysis of the coroner's reports show that this is indeed an overdose crisis in general and that the real portrait of drug users must be broadened.
