Media Notice - Commissioner Cavoukian to Unveil Best Practices for Smart Grid
Privacy Protection at Toronto Summit, June 16

TORONTO, June 14 /CNW/ - Ontario Information and Privacy Commissioner, Dr. Ann Cavoukian, will unveil a publication Wednesday that will help ensure the protection of consumer privacy as the electrical grid becomes "smarter." The new guidance document, developed with support from Hydro One and Toronto Hydro, will be launched at the Smart Grid Interoperability Summit in Toronto at 11.15am on June 16, 2010.

The guidance document will include:

    
    -   An overview of the Smart Grid in Ontario and the changing nature of
        electrical utilities;
    -   Examination of personal information in the context of the future
        Smart Grid (e.g. real-time, granular information on the use of
        appliances in the home);
    -   Best practices for embedding privacy into new Smart Grid systems - to
        be leveraged by utilities in Canada, the United States and worldwide;
        and
    -   Practical illustrations of methods to build Ontario's emerging Smart
        Grid system, with privacy embedded into the design.

The Commissioner and senior executives from Hydro One and Toronto Hydro will be available for comment at a media huddle following the Commissioner's 11.15am presentation.
