Media Opportunity - The Battle of the Châteauguay - Commemorating Unsung Heroes at Parks Canada Français
GATINEAU, QC, Aug. 26, 2013 /CNW/ - The year 2013 marks the 200th anniversary of the heroic Battle of the Châteauguay. In line with this event, Parks Canada is participating in the Montreal Military Culture Festival from August 30th to September 2nd.
This battle is significant in the history of Québec and of Canada, yet is little known by the general public. Americans had planned to take control of the St. Lawrence River by strategically taking possession of Montreal via the route along the Châteauguay River. There were only approximately 400 Canadian soldiers, which included Amerindians, against 2000 American soldiers.
We would like to offer you the possibility of developing a story depicting the heroic fate of this small army of patriotic Canadians. The battle is linked to landmarks such as Chambly, Beauharnois and Boucherville, to name a few.
Hélène D'Amours, Interpreter, is available to speak with you about this strategic historical moment of the War of 1812.
A number of artefact photos and sketches of the battle are available upon request.
