Medical Students Meet with Policy Makers to Discuss the Future of Health Care in New Brunswick
SAINT JOHN NB, May 8, 2013 /CNW/ - Medical students and residents from New Brunswick met with the Minister of Health (Ted Flemming), CEO of the New Brunswick Medical Society (Anthony Knight), President and CEO of Horizon Health (John McGarry), CEO of the New Brunswick Health Council (Stephane Robichaud), and retired physician and Chair of the New Brunswick Education Medical Trust (Dr. Donald Craig) on Monday May 6th, 2013.
Tara Jennings, a New Brunswick medical student on the Canadian Federation of Medical Students (CFMS) set up the panel discussion which focused on issues surrounding recruiting and retaining physicians in the province. The goal was for the meeting to provide a better foundation for future collaboration between the students and the key decisions makers in creating an effective and sustainable New Brunswick health care system. Issues such as human health resource planning, spending and health outcomes of our population, physician job availability, billing numbers, incentive strategies, and NB Summer Preceptorship Program were discussed. The importance of medical student and physician involvement in health care decisions through an effective relationship with government was made clear.
