TORONTO, Dec. 2, 2015 /CNW/ - WWF-Canada is delighted to announce that Megan Leslie, former Member of Parliament for Halifax and Vice Chair of the Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development has joined its oceans team in a senior advisory role.
"At WWF-Canada, we believe that sustainable conservation gains for nature can only be secured when the economic and social needs of communities are also secured. Ms. Leslie, with her deep background in serving the needs of communities throughout her career at the Dalhousie Legal Aid Service and as a Member of Parliament, is uniquely placed to help us achieve success in our work on marine planning, sustainable fishing, the protection of ocean biodiversity, and habitat friendly renewable energy. We are delighted that she has agreed to join our organization" said David Miller, President and CEO of WWF-Canada.
"I am pleased to be joining WWF-Canada," said Ms. Leslie. "I have always fought to ensure opportunity for people from all walks of life, and environmental issues have been a passion for me since high school. WWF-Canada's approach to conservation will give me an opportunity to continue this work in many areas of Canada, by helping to build community resilience and economic strength, while doing the right things for our environment."
WWF's oceans programme currently works in the Arctic, Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, seeking to conserve and protect areas for marine mammals and other species. Its work focuses on engaging local communities in conservation in ways that support employment that is sustainable over time.
Ms. Leslie's initial appointment is to June 2016 where she will assist in the implementation of the organization's new five year plan.
