CALGARY, Oct. 30, 2013 /CNW/ - Joan Crockatt, Member of Parliament (Calgary Centre), on behalf of the Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, today announced support for the Sled Island Arts Fellowship, presenter of the Sled Island Music and Arts Festival.
"The Government of Canada is pleased to support the Sled Island Arts Fellowship," said Ms. Crockatt. "The Sled Island Music and Arts Festival is an important part of our community, providing residents and visitors with increased access to high-quality performances that appeal to a range of audiences, including young people, Aboriginal peoples and the Francophone community. There's something for everyone!"
Funding will allow the Sled Island Arts Fellowship to present the 8th Sled Island Music and Arts Festival, from June 18 to 22, 2014. This annual independent festival, founded in 2007, promotes emerging local talent alongside established national and international artists. Festival activities will include music performances, artistic displays and film presentations. More than 30,000 visitors are expected to attend.
"The Sled Island Music and Arts Festival is a true celebration of artistic diversity," said Minister Glover. "The strength and tenacity shown by Sled Island and the many other arts organizations affected by the devastating floods in Alberta this past summer is inspirational and a testament to the resilience of the cultural community. Congratulations and best wishes for a fantastic festival next year."
"We are thrilled that Canadian Heritage decided to renew its support for the festival. They've been a great partner for the last two years, and the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program has helped us greatly in growing our organization," said Maud Salvi, Executive Director of the Sled Island Arts Fellowship.
The Sled Island Arts Fellowship is a non-profit organization dedicated to producing the annual Sled Island Music and Arts Festival in Calgary. One of the region's most anticipated yearly events, the festival takes place in a variety of venues across the city and focuses on providing visitors with a wide range of multidisciplinary artistic activities and experiences.
The Government of Canada has provided $75,200 through the Building Communities through Arts and Heritage program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program provides Canadians with more opportunities to take part in activities that present local arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage.
