MONCTON, NB, Dec. 19, 2013 /CNW/ - Robert Goguen, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice and Member of Parliament (Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe), today announced funding for Moncton's Capitol Theatre. He made the announcement on behalf of the Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.
"The Capitol Theatre is one of the most important cultural venues in Atlantic Canada," said Mr. Goguen. "By supporting it, we will be providing Greater Moncton residents and visitors with rich cultural experiences throughout the year."
Over its next two seasons, the Capitol Theatre will offer programming with Bodies in Motion and What's New in New Brunswick as the respective themes. Thanks to this funding, some forty artistic performances in music, dance, theatre and comedy will be presented, along with a youth program. Emerging and renowned performers from here and away will appear at the Capitol Theatre, which has been presenting a wide array of programming for over 20 years.
"With Canada's 150th birthday celebrations coming up in 2017, our Government is proud to invest in organizations like the Capitol Theatre, which play a crucial role in the vitality of our communities," said Minister Glover. "They strengthen our collective identity and help to define us as Canadians."
"The 2015-2016 Capitol's season performances will highlight emerging artists from New Brunswick, focusing our programming efforts on introducing soon-to-be-loved artists to the community," said Marc Chouinard, Capitol Theatre General Manager. "The Capitol will continue, as it has since reopening in 1993, to offer a beautiful stage, professional technicians and facilities, marketing and promotion services, as well as eager audiences, for these emerging artists."
The Government of Canada is providing funding of $100,000 over two years ($50,000 in 2014-2015 and $50,000 in 2015-2016) through the Canada Arts Presentation Fund of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program gives Canadians increased access to the variety and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentations of live professional performances, and other artistic experiences.
