LONDON, ON, Oct. 18, 2013 /CNW/ - Susan Truppe, Member of Parliament (London North), on behalf of the Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, today announced funding for improvements to London's Grand Theatre.
"The Grand Theatre is a dynamic player in our community's cultural life," said Ms. Truppe. "Today's investment will help make this professional arts space more accessible and efficient. I look forward to seeing the results of these improvements, which will enhance the theatre experience for both audiences and artists."
This investment will improve the energy efficiency of the building's lighting and communication systems, ensure the Grand Theatre continues to meet health and safety standards for performers, and improve outreach for the theatre and local professional arts groups through a new digital marquee.
"Our Government is proud to invest in vital and vibrant cultural spaces," said Minister Glover. "Investments like this one in cultural infrastructure benefit the economy and enhance the cultural profile of our communities."
"This support will allow us to continue with investments in the capacity and energy efficiencies in safety and communication at our theatre. Installation of digital marquee signage and lighting, new program paging and sound, and the replacement of safety mechanisms for our fly system will be addressed with this federal contribution," said Ron Koudys, President of the Grand Theatre Board. "The Canada Cultural Spaces Fund is integral to the fund raising initiatives of not-for-profit arts organizations. This type of support provides the critical foundation that then allows us to leverage matching funds to complete necessary capital improvements to our buildings."
The Government of Canada has provided funding of $267,000 through the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund of the Department of Canadian Heritage. The Canada Cultural Spaces Fund seeks to improve physical conditions for artistic creativity and arts presentation or exhibition. It is also designed to increase access for Canadians to performing, visual, and media arts, and to museum collections and heritage displays.
