ST. GEORGES, MB, Dec. 13, 2013 /CNW/ - Ted Falk, Member of Parliament (Provencher), took part today in the grand opening of the gymnasium at École communautaire Saint-Georges. Mr. Falk was visiting the Franco-Manitoban community on behalf of the Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.
"Our two official languages are an integral part of our country's history and identity," said Mr. Falk. "This funding clearly demonstrates how we can meet the needs of the community while also encouraging linguistic and cultural development and identity-building among young Canadians."
"Our Government is a leader in promoting both our official languages across the country," said Minister Glover. "With this support, we have helped make this institution a gathering place for the entire Francophone community."
The Government of Canada provided $1.07 million in funding for this project through the Canada-Manitoba Agreement on Minority Language Education and Second Official Language Instruction 2009-10 to 2012-13. Under this agreement, the Government of Canada is investing in community spaces at the school-community centre, including the gymnasium and a multipurpose room. This agreement is implemented as part of the Minority-Language Education component of the Development of Official-Language Communities Program. It targets enhancing the provision of programs and activities in provinces and territories in the area of education in the language of official-language minority communities (Anglophones in Quebec and Francophones outside of Quebec) at all levels of education.
The Government of Canada unveiled the Roadmap for Canada's Official Languages 2013-2018 last spring. The new Roadmap focuses on three pillars that will ensure the vitality of English and French across Canada: education, immigration and communities. As outlined in Economic Action Plan 2013, the Government of Canada is renewing its unprecedented investment in the protection, promotion and celebration of both official languages for another five years.
