Métis Crossing, Alberta's First Major Métis Cultural Interpretive Destination, to Re-Open for Visitors July 2, 2020
Beginning July 2, 2020, Métis Crossing will reopen, welcoming visitors to the recently completed Cultural Gathering Centre, to participate in their Meet the Métis interpretive experience and camping.
SMOKY LAKE, AB, June 24, 2020 /CNW/ - Beginning July 2, 2020, Métis Crossing will re-open to visitors, offering modified interpretive programming and camping options. Operating in accordance with provincial guidelines, Métis Crossing experiential programming will be limited to their immersive Meet the Métis program, providing isolated family units and small groups a socially distanced interpretive experience.
Beginning June 23, 2020 visitors can book their Meet the Métis experience, which includes a guided interpretive tour of Métis Crossing and an introduction to the Métis people. Visitors will experience a tour of traditional lands, camps and trappers cabins guided by a Métis Knowledge Holder; an overview of traditional seasonal practices and their importance to the Métis, as well as demonstrations of art, stories, and history. Traditional games, fiddling, jigging lessons and traditional arts and crafts are also part of their immersive experience.
"We are thrilled to be re-opening our doors to visitors and offering a cultural interpretive experience in a safe and thoughtful manner," said Juanita Marois, Executive Director, Métis Crossing. Adding, "Métis Crossing sits on over 500 acres of land, affording us the opportunity to develop a safe experience for families and isolated cohorts to get out and explore in the wide-open spaces of Métis Crossing."
Métis Crossing is the premier destination for Alberta Métis cultural interpretation, education, gatherings, and business development. The recently completed Cultural Gathering Centre, designed by Métis Architect Tiffany Shaw-Collinge from Manasc Isaac Architects, offers a stunning structure that hints at the building style of the fur trade era river lot homes, with the functionality of a contemporary place to gather, learn, and share the Métis story.
Métis Crossing will be re-opening their camping facilities overlooking the beautiful North Saskatchewan River. To ensure that visitors and employees are doing their part to stay safe, RVs will maintain a 30' distance between other RV sites, and campsites will only be available to campers with their own source of running water and power, no tenting will be available at this time.
"Métis Crossing is proud to offer all our visitors from any variety of backgrounds, age, or previous knowledge of Métis history, a comprehensive interpretive experience, sharing the distinct indigenous story of the Métis people with everyone."
Beginning June 23, 2020 Métis Crossing will be accepting bookings for the Meet the Métis program. Bookings will be available to groups of 10 or less and all bookings will be allocated a reserved date and time for their private tour experience.
