Grocer invites customers to meet their local farmer at in-store event July 11
OTTAWA, July 6, 2015 /CNW/ - Ottawa residents will have the opportunity to meet their local farmers at Metro Store #273 in Casselman, Ontario, on July 11, 2015 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.. The Vader family from Millcreek farms, who supplies Metro Ontario stores with fresh sweet peas, will be in-store to share information on the locally sourced produce with customers.
This summer, Metro Ontario is holding a series of in-store events in response to consumers' growing interest in local, seasonal produce and their desire to make better shopping choices based on where food is farmed.
"One of the best parts of our business is working with the people who grow what we eat," says Nancy Modrcin, Senior Director of Marketing for Metro Ontario. "We're excited to offer our customers the opportunity to meet our local growers and learn more about where their food comes from. Millcreek Farms, run by the Vader family, is a true generational family farm, and the only operation in North America producing fresh green "out-of-the-pod" peas on such a large scale." The Vaders are known for consistently high quality produce, integrity, and community spirit.
The fresh sweet peas harvested by the Vader family are a prime source of folic acid, protein, vitamins and fibre. Specifically, this vegetable is packed with vitamin K, supporting the building of bone mass, in addition to Vitamin A, an essential nutrient required for maintaining healthy skin and eyesight.
Metro is holding "Meet Your Local Farmer" events in communities across Ontario including Hamilton, London, Ottawa, and Toronto. Each appearance will feature a different producer and locally grown seasonal produce item. In March 2015, Metro was recognized by Foodland Ontario, an initiative of the government of Ontario, for its support and commitment to local food producers.
