Work is underway to deliver service by 2015
TORONTO, Nov. 21, 2012 /CNW/ - Metrolinx welcomes the Divisional Court's decision to dismiss the action brought by Clean Train Coalition in reference to the air rail link (ARL).
We will continue to work closely with the community to move forward on building the most efficient air rail link for the region. We aren't that far apart in our goals from those who advocate electrification; with the EA in progress, we are on the path towards electrification of the air rail link.
Work is underway and the air rail link service will be delivered in time for the XVII Pan/ParaPan American Games in summer 2015. Part of The Big Move, Metrolinx's regional transportation plan, the ARL will take 1.2 million car trips off the road in its first year alone, reducing congestion and harmful emissions in our communities.
The air rail link service will use leading-edge technology to provide the cleanest passenger diesel trains available in Canada. Metrolinx is currently engaged in the preliminary design and EA for the electrification of the ARL service. The ARL vehicles are fully convertible to electric, and the track upgrades and spur line are being built to allow for electrification.
Metrolinx is working to provide residents and businesses in the Greater Toronto & Hamilton Area (GTHA) with a transportation system that is modern, efficient and integrated.
