OTTAWA, Nov. 20, 2017 /CNW/ - The Michener Awards Foundation encourages news organizations and journalists to submit their entries for the annual Michener Award for unbiased public service journalism, and to apply for two fellowships that will be offered next year.
Alan Allnutt, the foundation president, urges news organizations, including to submit their journalism that has achieved results for the public good this year to be considered for the prestigious Michener Award.
He also encourages qualifying journalists to apply for two Michener-Deacon Fellowships, one for investigative reporting, the other for journalism education. Both offer $30,000 and $5,000 in expenses.
The deadline for both the Michener Award entries and fellowship applications is February 23, 2018. Full details are available on the foundation's website, http://www.michenerawards.ca/
The late Right Honourable Roland Michener, Governor General of Canada, established the Award in 1970. It has become Canada's most coveted honour for public service journalism. Judges are required to take into account the resources available to the news organization to produce the reportage. As a result media organizations large and small, including weeklies and periodicals, have won awards and citations.
The Michener-Deacon Fellowship for Investigative Reporting, supported by BMO Financial Group, is Canada's premier award to encourage excellence in journalism that serves the public interest through improvements in public policy, ethical standards, corporate governance or the lives of Canadians.
The Michener-Deacon Fellowship for Education, supported by CN, funds a mature journalist for a semester as journalist-in-residence at a Canadian journalism department. The winning applicant is expected to undertake a project dedicated to the advancement of the education of Canadian journalists and students in collaboration with a journalism school.
