Social Impact Group at the forefront of Canadian social innovation
TORONTO, April 27, 2016 /CNW/ - Miller Thomson's Charities and Not-For-Profit Group, the largest national team of legal experts in Canada dedicated to helping organizations accelerate their social impact, has changed its name to better reflect the evolving nature of its work in the charitable and not-for-profit sectors. The newly named Social Impact Group will continue to provide unique value-added services that help organizations succeed through changing economic, political and technological realities.
"Clients are looking for sustainable new ways to deliver social change," said Susan Manwaring, National Chair of Miller Thomson's Social Impact Group. "Increasingly, our legal team is being called upon to help organizations design innovative structures, identify and unlock creative sources of revenue, lay the groundwork for social investments, and navigate a changing landscape of regulatory and financial risk."
Manwaring attributes growing demand for her team's specialized legal expertise to a number of factors. Charitable causes are finding that the demand for services is always increasing, but sources of revenue are more difficult to find, forcing charitable and not-for-profit organizations to do more with less. New and emerging digital technologies are meanwhile challenging organizations to reconsider how they deliver services and structure themselves for long-term success. Adding to these challenges are quickly changing federal and provincial regulations with the potential to increase risk and complexity within the sector.
A rise in the number of charities, not-for-profits and social enterprises pursuing innovative ideas, concepts and strategies is further fuelling demand for advanced social sector expertise. This is in addition to growing corporate interest in socially responsible investing—a legally complex practice that requires measuring the value of social investments and ensuring companies remain accountable to shareholders.
"Traditional distinctions between charitable and profit-oriented activities are giving way to new and evolving concepts for how organizations of all types—charities, non-profits, and business organizations—can work and collaborate to achieve social impact," said Manwaring.
