Minister Ambrose and MP David Sweet applaud 'Walk A Mile In Her Shoes' Campaign in Hamilton Français
HAMILTON, ON, June 24, 2012 /CNW/ - The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, and David Sweet, Member of Parliament for Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale, today congratulated the participants in Hamilton's 3rd annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes: the International Men's March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault and Gender Violence.
"I applaud the men and boys participating in this important community event. They recognize that responsibility for violence against women and girls rests with all of us and that only by working together will we solve this enduring problem," said Minister Ambrose.
"Congratulations to today's participants!" said Mr. Sweet. "Hamiltonians from all walks of life, from hockey players to firefighters, are forming a united front to end violence against women and girls in our community."
The event, which raises funds for YWCA Hamilton's Transitional Living Program, calls on men and boys to promote awareness and demonstrate their support for ending violence against women and girls by walking for one mile in a pair of women's high-heeled shoes.
"YWCA Hamilton is an important organization that provides safe and secure housing and support for women through its Transitional Living Program," said Ms. Denise Doyle, Chief Executive Officer. "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is an annual event that raises awareness of poverty and the effects of violence on women's lives. I congratulate my fellow walkers, who have demonstrated their commitment and support to end violence within their community."
The Government of Canada is committed to ending all forms of violence against women and girls. Since 2007, more than $49 million in federal funding has been approved for projects that seek to address this serious issue. By working at the community level, we are improving the lives of women and girls across Canada.
