Minister Ambrose congratulates Alberta grandmothers organization for work for women and girls

EDMONTON, AB, Oct. 13, 2012 /CNW/ - The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, today congratulated the Alberta organization Grandmothers of Alberta for a New Generation (GANG). This year's annual Power of Words scrabble event will benefit the Stephen Lewis Foundation Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign.

"I commend Grandmothers of Alberta for a New Generation for their contributions toward improving the lives of women and girls in Africa by demonstrating leadership and engaging their local communities in Alberta," said Minister Ambrose, "As we celebrate International Day of the Girl, we recognize the challenges that girls face as well as their ability to be powerful forces for change in their families and communities."

This year, GANG's event has a special focus on girls in recognition of the first-ever International Day of the Girl, which was celebrated just two days ago on October 11, 2012. The Government of Canada recognizes the enormous potential of girls and young women to take on leadership roles in our communities, and celebrates the leadership roles that girls and young women have played throughout our country's history.

October is Women's History Month in Canada. In honour of the first-ever International Day of the Girl, the theme for Women's History Month is "Strong Girls, Strong Canada: Leaders from the Start." For information on International Day of the Girl and Women's History Month 2012, go to women.gc.ca
