VANCOUVER, BC, June 19, 2012 /CNW/ - The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, today congratulated Ms. Tracy Porteous, Executive Director of Ending Violence Association of British Columbia (EVA BC) for receiving the Scotiabank Game Changer Award. The Award was presented in Vancouver on June 13, 2012, during the BC Lions Football Club game.
"I salute Tracy Porteous, who as Executive Director of EVA BC, has worked to build safer communities for women and their families in British Columbia," said Minister Ambrose. "Thanks to Ms. Porteous and other dedicated people and organizations, we are building the momentum needed to eliminate violence against women and domestic abuse in all its forms. Congratulations, Tracy, on this well-deserved honour."
In March 2011, EVA BC and the BC Lions Football club teamed up to create Be More Than a Bystander, a groundbreaking three-year project aimed at helping people understand that everyone has a role in breaking the silence around violence against women. With support from the Government of Canada, through Status of Women Canada, and B.C.'s Ministry of Children and Family Development, EVA BC and the BC Lions are working together to develop and deliver a series of interactive workshops, training activities, and a film and viewer's guide directed at youth.
The Government of Canada is committed to supporting projects that yield concrete results for women and girls in Canada while strengthening families, communities and the country. Through the Women's Program of Status of Women Canada, the government's support for community-based projects has nearly doubled since 2006-2007, from $10.8 million to close to $19 million, its highest level ever. Since 2007, more than $49 million in federal funding has been approved for projects that seek to address violence against women and girls.
