OTTAWA, Dec. 16, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of Veterans Affairs, is today calling on Canadians across the country to reach out and engage with Veterans in their communities this holiday season.
Through Veterans Affairs Canada, the Government is constantly working to provide a broad range of supports and services to Canadian Veterans. By connecting with Veterans over the holidays, all Canadians can take part in extending the season's spirit of goodwill within their communities.
"This past November 11th, Canadians were asked to remember every day. The holiday season is a very special time of year, and a perfect opportunity to reach out and say thanks to those whose accomplishments in the name of Canada have allowed us to spend time with our loved ones in peace and security," said Minister Fantino. "I join all Canadians in honouring our service men and women who, through their courage, determination and sacrifices, have helped to ensure that we can live in a free and peaceful country. We owe it to those who have served to remember and understand the extent of their contributions, to offer our support and to assure them of our immense gratitude and care for the work they have done on behalf of Canada."
Canadians everywhere are encouraged to reach out to Veterans living in long-term care facilities within their communities, to send holiday greetings, or to send a postcard to Veterans online. Using Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube, Canadians can show they remember by posting photos, videos, and messages using the hashtags #ShowYouRemember and #ShowYourThanks.
"Interacting with Veterans is a valuable opportunity, especially for youth, and encourages a deeper understanding of our country's identity. Passing the torch of remembrance to future generations is a vital investment in our culture. Reaching out also gives Veterans a chance to know that their sacrifices and achievements are remembered and that Canadians care," said Minister Fantino.
