OTTAWA, Sept. 24, 2017 /CNW/ - Today, on the occasion of the Canadian Police and Peace Officers' 40th Annual Memorial Service, flags on federal buildings across the country are flying at half-mast in honour of the more than 860 men and women whose names are engraved on the Honour Roll tablets on Parliament Hill.
The Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, issued the following statement to pay his respects to fallen officers.
"On behalf of the Government of Canada and all Canadians, I am deeply honoured to pay tribute to the brave police and peace officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice while keeping our communities safe. They will not be forgotten. Today we remember them, we honour them and we show our deepest respect and gratitude to them.
As Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, I appreciate how difficult and dangerous their job can be—a job they do courageously, despite the danger. They serve and protect our communities every day, and we are humbled by their service.
The Canadian Police and Peace Officers' Annual Memorial Service gives Canadians an opportunity to express their appreciation for the dedication of police and peace officers who contribute so much and have sadly lost their lives in the line of duty. This year, Constable Richer Dubuc's name has been added to the Honour Roll tablets, as a lasting reminder of his contribution and sacrifice. Constable Dubuc died tragically on duty on March 6, 2017 in Lacolle, Quebec.
We also acknowledge that in recent days the policing community has suffered the loss of other officers in other circumstances in other parts of Canada. We share in the grief of their families, friends and fellow officers, and offer our gratitude and deepest condolences.
