OTTAWA, June 6, 2016 /CNW/ - Last night, with the sighting of the new moon, Muslims in Canada and around the world mark the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. According to Islam, Ramadan is the month in which the first passages of the Quran were revealed to the Prophet Mohammed.
It is a time for giving, sharing, and spending time with friends, family, and community, as we see with the nightly meal, or Iftar, when people gather to break their fast and with the congregations that gather for the nightly prayers.
As Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for multiculturalism, I extend my best wishes to all who are celebrating.
Ramadan Mubarak!
