OTTAWA, Nov. 29, 2012 /CNW/ - The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, today announced funding for the Baie-Comeau Airport to make an important safety improvement.
"The Baie-Comeau Airport is a vital gateway for this region," said Minister Lebel. "This investment promotes the safe and efficient movement of passengers and cargo during all seasons and will help to ensure the right conditions for growth, job creation and economic prosperity in Northern Quebec."
This year, the Baie-Comeau Airport is receiving $178,358 through the Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP) for the purchase of a towed runway sweeper to replace the current one. The new towed runway sweeper will ensure the timely and effective removal of snow, slush and ice from runways and taxiways.
"The MRC in Manicouagan is pleased with Transport Canada's financial support for the maintenance of our infrastructure. We need the Airports Capital Assistance Program to ensure that our regional airport can be fully functional," said Ms. Arlette Girard, Reeve of the Municipalité régionale de comté (MRC) in Manicouagan.
In 2012-2013, the Government of Canada will invest more than $27.1 million for 42 safety-related improvements at 28 airports across Canada. Improvements include purchasing/replacing heavy airside mobile equipment; installing wildlife fencing; and rehabilitating runway pavements, airfield lighting and electrical systems.
To date, through ACAP, the Government of Canada has invested more than $587.1 million for 722 projects at 173 airports. The Baie-Comeau Airport has received more than $1.8 million for five projects, including today's announcement.
