Status of Women minister highlights government of Canada actions to promote the participation of women in the Canadian economy
AJAX, ON, Sept.3, 2014 /CNW/ - The Honourable Dr. K. Kellie Leitch, Minister of Labour and Minister of Status of Women, accompanied by the Honourable Chris Alexander, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration and Member of Parliament for Ajax-Pickering, spoke today to the Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade about the important contribution of women in the economy and Government of Canada measures to support women in business.
Specifically, the Minister highlighted federal actions that support women entrepreneurs. For example, the Government of Canada, through Status of Women Canada, supports community-based projects across the country that focus on helping women entrepreneurs succeed. In addition, Economic Action Plan 2014 committed to increasing mentorship among women entrepreneurs. As part of this commitment, the Minister of Status of Women is consulting with Canadians on how to increase the number of women entering into and succeeding in business.
Minister Leitch also spoke about the Government of Canada's commitment to increase the participation of women on corporate boards. Referring to the recently released report by the federal Advisory Council for Promoting Women on Boards, Minister Leitch urged business leaders to aspire to seeing women attain 30% of all board positions over the next five years.

Of this amount, more than $9 million has gone to projects that support women in entrepreneurship.
