SASKATOON, SK, Aug. 4, 2012 /CNW/ - On behalf of the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State (Western Economic Diversification), today joined Veterans, Canadian Forces members, community leaders, and members of the public for the opening ceremony of the Canada Remembers Our Heroes Tribute. The event honours the contributions of Veterans and pays tribute to fallen Canadian Forces members. Veterans Affairs Canada has contributed up to $8,000 to this event through the Community Engagement Partnership Fund.
"Today we honour these brave Canadians who have upheld and continue to uphold our shared values of peace, freedom, democracy and the rule of law," said Minister Blaney. "Our Government is pleased to support commemorative events like the Canada Remembers Our Heroes Tribute, which bring communities together to recognize the sacrifices of our nation's truest heroes."
"By participating in today's tribute, our Government is engaging Canadians, and most importantly youth, in the act of remembrance," said Minister Yelich. "It is gratifying to know that younger generations have special events like the one held today to remember and reflect on our country's proud military history."
"The Canada Remembers Our Heroes event is an opportunity for the people of Saskatoon to honour both our Veterans and our service men and women," said Maurice Vellacott, Member of Parliament for Saskatoon-Wanuskewin. "Our Government will continue to ensure that the legacy of our Veterans lives on for future generations."
The Canada Remembers Our Heroes event is a two-day air show tribute to Veterans and still-serving Canadian Forces members. This event also recognizes law enforcement personnel, fire fighters and first responders.
The Community Engagement Partnership Fund provides funding for non-profit organizations, educational institutions and other groups interested in planning remembrance initiatives.
