NIAGARA FALLS, ON, July 14, 2016 /CNW/ - It is a time of real change and promise in this country, and the engagement of Indigenous Peoples and youth will be integral to achieving the Government of Canada's goals for a sustainable environment and economy.
Yesterday and today, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, the Honourable Catherine McKenna, attended the Assembly of First Nations Annual General Assembly in Niagara Falls, Ontario. While there, she met with Aboriginal chiefs, elders, and youth, hosted a dialogue on climate change, and delivered a plenary address that focused on the Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change, the review of environmental assessment processes, and how both traditional and scientific knowledge are critical components in environmental decision making.
Minister McKenna also highlighted the Government of Canada's long term commitment to renewing nation-to-nation relationships with Indigenous Peoples, and the importance of opportunities for dialogue such as the Annual General Assembly to strengthen those relationships over time.
