Advancing collective action to address global health challenges
OTTAWA, Sept. 9, 2016 /CNW/ - Many of today's biggest health challenges are shared by countries around the globe. Canada is an active partner in international efforts to address increasingly complex global health challenges.
The Honourable Jane Philpott, Minister of Health, will be in Kobe, Japan, September 11 – 12, 2016, to participate in the G7 Health Ministers' Meeting (HMM). Minister Philpott will be joined by Dr. Gregory Taylor, Canada's Chief Public Health Officer, and officials from Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada. The meeting provides opportunities to discuss key global health issues with G7 colleagues and international organizations.
Discussions at this year's G7 HMM will centre on actions that countries can take to help implement the health commitments made by G7 Leaders at their Summit this spring. In particular:
- reinforcing the global health architecture to support swifter, more effective and better coordinated responses to public health emergencies;
- combatting antimicrobial resistance by supporting multi-sectoral actions and finding ways to strengthen and coordinate research and development, and
- attaining universal health coverage for sustainable, resilient and inclusive health systems, that can support healthy and active ageing populations.
In addition to the G7 sessions, Minister Philpott and Dr. Taylor will meet with international colleagues to gain insight on health issues, share Canada's experiences, and discuss opportunities for future collaboration.
Quotes
"The health of Canadians, and people around the world, depends on resilient and sustainable health systems that can respond to the current and future needs of populations. In today's world, we all need to work together to create those systems — both within individual countries, and on a global scale. I look forward to working with my G7 health colleagues to advance actions that support our shared objective of creating a healthier world."
The Honourable Jane Philpott
Minister of Health
"The nature of global health is such that an issue affecting one country has the potential to impact all countries. Together, we can advance collective efforts toward shared priorities like antimicrobial resistance, ageing populations and health emergency response. "
Dr. Gregory Taylor
Chief Public Health Officer
