VANCOUVER, Oct. 7, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transport today addressed participants at the Canadian Innovation Summit about the important role that new technologies play in the transportation sector.
"Innovation is crucial to how we move people and goods safely and efficiently," said Minister Raitt. "As markets around the world change, it is vital for our transportation systems to keep ahead of these changes. A strong and efficient transportation sector is critical to Canada's future economic growth."
Minister Raitt showcased how Transport Canada is involved in several projects related to transportation innovation and technology adoption. Through innovative partnerships such as the Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative, government and the private sector are working together to realize the benefits of our strategic gateways and have the right environment for Canadian industry to grow and prosper.
She spoke about Transport Canada's Clean Transportation Initiative, and how Transport Canada supports the deployment of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) to better integrate transportation modes and networks that help businesses save time and money.
Minister Raitt also addressed the role of innovation in improving safety and stressed that innovation is also about the steps we take to protect environment and people. As an example, she noted the importance of the World Class Tanker Safety System announced this year to strengthen marine safety in Canada to protect our environment and our people.
"This initiative will enhance safety related to the marine transportation of oil by focusing on prevention, preparedness and response, and liability and compensation," said Minister Raitt.
The application of innovative practices and technologies in transportation provide the opportunity for continuous improvement and help to:
- ensure the transportation system is safe and secure;
- create economic growth and jobs;
- improve the quality of life of Canadians;
- move goods and people more efficiently; and
- reduce transportation's impact on the environment.
The Canadian Innovation Summit, led by Shell, is featuring dynamic, interactive discussions and debates with a broad range of participants and speakers, such as leading Canadian business and technology leaders, experts from various sectors, policy makers, and key stakeholders. The Summit is meant to generate innovative thinking and ideas on complex issues such as future energy demands and the need for collaboration and innovation in skills training.
