GATINEAU, QC, May 8, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada's Labour Minister, today addressed Building and Construction Trades Department (BCTD) members on Canada's recent economic performance and on recently announced Economic Action Plan initiatives at their 2013 Canadian Policy Conference.
"While our economy continues to grow and create jobs, the global economy remains fragile and a growing mismatch exists between available jobs and those looking for work," said Minister Raitt. "Through Economic Action Plan 2013, we are providing Canadians with better access to the information and the skills they need for tomorrow's job market."
Economic Action Plan 2013 announced measures to equip Canadians with the skills and training needed to support the skilled trades. These include:
- the new Canada Job Grant;
- increased support for apprentices; and,
- better training opportunities for groups that are under-represented in the workforce, such as people with disabilities, youth, Aboriginal people and newcomers to Canada.
Economic Action Plan 2013 also proposes to provide youth with more information on the job prospects and benefits of working in the skilled trades, science, technology, engineering and mathematics to promote education and careers in these high-demand fields.
The BCTD provides essential coordination and support to the work of its affiliated national and international unions. It also provides a voice for organized construction workers to represent their position in government, in bargaining and in their communities.
