Minister Raitt promotes healthy, safe and inclusive work environments at Walk to Fight Arthritis Launch

TORONTO, May 15, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada's Labour Minister, spoke to attendees at the Arthritis Society Walk to Fight Arthritis Media Launch 2013. Minister Raitt highlighted the Government's commitment to healthier, safer and more inclusive workplaces while raising awareness of issues surrounding arthritis.

Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in Canada among women and the second among men. Approximately 100 000 Canadians are diagnosed with arthritis each year, and about 60 percent of Canadians dealing with the disease are under age 65.

Arthritis is estimated to cost the Canadian economy $33 billion annually.

"Workplaces across the country should provide all individuals with the opportunity to achieve their full potential and contribute to Canada's economic prosperity," said Minister Raitt. "Both employers and employees have a role to play in creating workplaces where everyone's needs are accommodated and respected."

The Arthritis Society is Canada's only not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing and promoting arthritis education, community support and research-based solutions to the over 4.6 million Canadians living with arthritis.

The Labour Program develops, administers and enforces workplace legislation and regulations, such as the Canada Labour Code, which covers industrial relations, health, safety and employment standards for federally regulated workers and employers, and the Employment Equity Act.
