Minister Raitt stresses the importance of transportation safety in speech to the Council of Public Affairs Executives Français
OTTAWA, Oct. 10, 2013 /CNW/ - Today, the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transport underscored the critical role that safety plays in Canada's transportation sector in a speech to the 2013 Fall Meeting of the Council of Public Affairs Executives.
"Transportation is an essential part of the Canadian economy and safety is paramount for all transportation modes," said Minister Raitt. "Our government is committed to ensuring the safety and security of our transportation system."
Minister Raitt talked about the government's priority of safety and highlighted its investment of more than $100 million in Canada's rail safety system, Canada's improved rail safety record, and safety and oversight regulations, which provide authority to increase fines and provide whistleblower protection for employees with safety concerns. Minister Raitt also spoke about Canada's World Class Tanker Safety initiative which focuses on prevention, preparedness and response, and liability and compensation in the marine transportation of oil.
"By working with industry across all modes of transportation, we will maintain a safe transportation system and support a prosperous future," added Minister Raitt.
Following her speech, Minister Raitt participated in a roundtable discussion on business conditions and priority issues for industry. She also shared her insight into both the Government's priorities and its decision-making processes.
Under the Conference Board of Canada, The Council of Public Affairs Executives is a network of senior executives who have overall responsibility for public affairs within their organization. The public affairs council provides a forum for learning, networking, and professional development for public affairs executives.
